Framing Lumber: The Foundation of Any Structure

For framing projects such as building a wall or resizing a window, 2x4 and 2x6 lumber are the most commonly used sizes. These come in both whitewood and fir. Whitewood is lightweight and cost-effective, while fir is known for its strength and ability to hold fasteners securely.

For subflooring, there are two primary options:

  • Dimensional Lumber (2x Material): Traditional solid wood that provides strong structural support.
  • I-Joists: Engineered lumber designed for longer spans with reduced risk of warping or shrinking. These are finished with rim board for added stability.

Lumber for Outdoor Projects

When working on outdoor structures, such as decks and fences, it’s important to use materials that can withstand exposure to moisture, temperature changes, and general wear.

  • Cedar & Redwood: Naturally resistant to moisture and insects, these woods are ideal for decks and fences. They are available in smooth-cut for a refined look or rough-cut for a more rustic appearance.
  • Pressure-Treated Lumber: Essential for any wood that will come into contact with moisture, dirt, or gravel. This treatment helps protect against rot, insects, and decay, making it the best option for framing, posts, and support beams in outdoor structures. Pressure-treated lumber is available in sizes from 2x4 to 2x12, as well as larger structural sizes like 4x4, 4x6, and 6x6.

Engineered Lumber for Strength and Stability

For projects that require precision and long-term durability, engineered lumber provides solutions that standard wood cannot.

  • LSL (Laminated Strand Lumber): A straight, structurally sound option used for tall walls (15-20 feet) that require stability without warping or bending.
  • LVL (Laminated Veneer Lumber): Typically used for headers and beams over doors and windows in lighter structural applications.
  • Glulam (Glued Laminated Timber): Designed for large spans and heavy loads, commonly used for structural support beams in open-concept designs.

‍

Selecting Interior Trim

The type of wood you choose for interior trim will determine the overall look and finish of your space. Some of the most popular choices include:

  • Knotty Pine: A great option for a rustic or cabin-style look.
  • Clear Pine: A higher-grade, stain-ready option for a clean and polished appearance.
  • Hemlock: A smooth, versatile option that works well for both staining and painting.
  • Redwood: Provides warmth and rich color, making it an excellent choice for accent trim.

Sheathing and Plywood for Roofing and Siding

For exterior sheathing, roofing, and siding, choosing the right plywood is critical for structural integrity and protection against the elements.

  • OSB (Oriented Strand Board): A cost-effective option that provides good strength for sheathing applications.
  • CDX Plywood: A more durable and moisture-resistant sheathing material that offers  additional structural support.
  • ACX Plywood: A smooth, sanded plywood ideal for shelving, cabinetry, and interior projects that require a finished appearance.
