🥕 With warm weather making its way into our lives (and boy, aren’t we grateful!), it’s time to start planning your garden with Kenyon Noble! Not sure where to start? Keep reading to get started on your gardening journey.

Garden type
When planning your garden, you need to start with the type of garden you want. There are endless possibilities, but we’re going to focus on the most popular options; in-ground, raised beds, and patio gardens.
In-ground garden: This type of garden requires the most work, as you’ll have to establish boundaries for your plants, till the soil, and weed control can be a little more painstaking. However, the benefits are a-plenty! In-ground gardens require less frequent watering, have less start-up needs, and are low-cost compared to raised beds.
Raised garden: Raised gardens have many benefits, including being nice to look at, versatile (you can build to whatever height you want and place the box anywhere you want), and allow you to completely control the soil quality. With that being said, raised beds do require more frequent watering and will need to be filled with topsoil and compost, and have more of a start-up cost than your traditional in-ground garden.
Patio garden: Perfect for small-living, patio gardens can be as creative as your mind will allow. While you won’t be able to have multiple plants in a given bed, having every plant in its own planter or pot allows you to rearrange whenever you see fit.

Set-up
Once you decide on the type of garden you want, it’s time to choose a good location.
You’ll want to choose a spot that has plenty of direct sunlight, adequate drainage, and convenient access to ensure you don’t feel like tending to your garden is a burden. Once you’ve found the perfect spot, map out how big you want your garden. If you’re opting for in-ground or raised garden beds, use string, wooden stakes, and your tape measure to plan the space before you commit to digging. If you’re going for a patio garden, plan out how many pots or planters you can fit in the available space.
Next up is building a shopping list for your needed supplies. Soil, compost, any tools you might need, cages or a trellis for climbing plants (ideal for small plots!), and last but not least…plants.

Plants
You can either start your plants from seed (see this blog post for tips and tricks) or buying pre-grown starter plants. If you act fast, there is still time to start your plants from seed. If you want to skip seeds this year, save the date for 5/2 when the Bozeman location Garden Center opens to shop all your gardening needs!
When it comes to choosing plants — grow what you love. It’s no use growing food you won’t eat, so be sure to maximize your space by only growing the things you know you’ll get use out of. Keep track of the plants you choose, their germination periods, and sketch out your planting layout with this super helpful Garden Journal from Botanical Interests.
