We’ve all been there: you’ve painted, rearranged the furniture, updated all your wall artwork, and even bought a new plant...but your light fixture just doesn’t fit the new look you’re going for. Good news! You aren’t stuck with this light, and you can swap it out for something new in an afternoon. Keep reading to see how simple a home project like this can be, and add that finishing touch to your new space before the summer parties commence!
1: Pick out your light!
Determine the fixture you want to replace and what you’d like to replace it with. There are many styles to choose from, from pendants to chandeliers, directional lighting to vanity lights. Explore your options in-store at your local Kenyon Noble and chat with our friendly and helpful staff for all of your project questions and needs! Pro tip: Be sure to check if you need to buy light bulbs separately before you leave the store!
2: Turn off the power
Find the electrical panel and flip breaker switch off to cut power to the circuit where fixture is located. Pro tip: Aren't sure which breaker powers the circuit? Leave something loud on and flip breakers until you locate the one that turns it off.
3: Remove decorative plate
First, remove all detachable and decorative parts like pull chains and the plate that conceals all mounting hardware. Then, carefully unscrew the mounting bracket while holding the fixture to make sure it doesn't crash to the ground.
4: Disconnect the wiring
Use an electrical current detector to make sure there's no electrical current running through fixture. Then disconnect the wires.
5: Remove fixture
Lower fixture from ceiling and set aside (you might need a second set of hands, depending on the size of the fixture.) Take this opportunity to spackle any holes or gaps, sand if necessary, and touch up paint before you install your new fixture.
6: Attach new mounting plate
Attach wires from the new fixture to the corresponding wires in ceiling. Position new mounting plate and screw into ceiling to attach fixture.
7: Install & test!
Install light bulbs and turn the breaker back on. Test out your new fixture by flipping on your light switch, and making sure any and all accessories are functional (pull-chains, remotes, etc.) If everything operates correctly, then attach all remaining decorative parts and enjoy your new light!
